President Buhari Should Declare State of Emergency on Apapa Roads- NAGAFF.

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a State of Emergency on the deplorable state of the Apapa, Tincan Ports access roads.

The national trade axis which rakes in about N7tr annually has become a beehive of vehicular stagnation making commuters stranded for long hours sometimes not keeping to appointments.

Presenting the appeal through a "Save-Our-Soul" letter, the association called on the President to seek feasible solutions to curb the menace adding the nation loses N12b daily to the injustice.

The appeal highlighted the presence of tank farms along the Apapa, Tin-Can, Ijora axis which contributes to the persistent gridlock suggested the tank farms be relocated to other sites other than residential places.

In their words: "The tank farms constitute a danger to lives and property of people who either live or work in Apapa, Ijora and Coconut areas.

"In the event of any emergency as a result of fire outbreak, no one living in the area would escape as the roads are always completely ridden with trucks.

"Even the emergency services will not be able to move into the area to effect any help as the road would be blocked.

"As a proactive measure to this problem we plead that a State of Emergency be declared on these roads to save both the economy and the catastrophe that may occur if there is a fire incident in any of the tank farms."

The letter continued on the issue of safety, "We hope the bridges will not collapse any moment because the integrity of the bridges are suspicious," the appeal stressed.

"In case of pronouncing a State of Emergency where the ongoing palliative work is progressing at a snail pace, there is the need to divert some of the incoming vessels to Eastern Ports," the letter explained.

The freight forwarding body suggested Mr. President makes a personal visit to the ports to have a first hand experience and make an informed decision on the crises.
