Mike Akhigbe Goes Home

The death of former Chief of General staff , Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe is seen as a colossal loss to the nation of Nigeria.

This comes at a time when the country is in need of private counsel to deal with current economic, social and security challenges.

Akhigbe who was chief of General Staff to President Abdulsalami Abubakar contributed immensely to the realisation of democratic rule in Nigeria in 1999.

Speaking at a condolence visit former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar said Akhigbe's remarkable contributions to Nigeria's transition from military to civil rule which lasted nine months, could not be easily forgotten. Akhigbe was part of the team that contributed to the successful and faithful transfer of power to civilians on May 29th, 1999.

Meanwhile in a statement signed by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity Kola Ologbondiyan, Senate President David Mark said "Mike was fearless and very diligent in our courses," (at the Nigerian Defence Academy). "He took these attributes to all the formations where he was privileged to have been posted either in his core military postings or in political offices," he concluded.

Atiku and Marks condolence messages came shortly after the head of the Akhigbe family, Chief Joseph Akhigbe on Teusday confirmed the death of the former Chief of General Staff.

The incident occurred at about 1.a.m. in the United States.
